Being a teacher means having the power to have a positive influence on our future generations. Teachers play a powerful and important role in the classroom context. We have the power to foster the community and environment for our students through modelling how we want our students to conduct themselves. Teacher’s thoughts, values, and actions all have the ability to define the climate and community in our classrooms (Shindler, 2010).
The reason I want to be a teacher is because I want to have a positive influence on students' lives. I hope to inspire and engage my students, providing them with the skills and knowledge they need to create active and informed future citizens. When I think back to my schooling there is always that one teacher that stands out as making school a positive learning experience for me, that's the teacher I want to be.
I believe all children are entitled to an equal, safe, supportive and rigorous education, so they have the opportunity to learn to their full potential, regardless of their disposition. I would expect my students to be engaged and independent learners. I play a crucial role in the lives of our future children, so I will establish a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment for all children. I will establish a socially inclusive learning environment. I will use engaging resources, structure the learning environment and use appropriate teaching pedagogies that will I strive to meet the needs of all students.
As a future teacher I strive to provide a learning environment that respects and values all students, and caters for the learning needs of every child. I understand that children have different learning styles and needs and I plan to establish a classroom environment where students feel valued and self-worth. Starr (1991) states that liberal social justice views believe that individuals are more likely to achieve if they are valued allowing them to form a strong sense of self-esteem and self-worth.
I have a passion for play-based learning, and allowing students to guide their own learning through inquiry based pedagogies. I feel this helps establish independent and informed learners. I hope to achieve this through using elements of the Reggio Emilia philosophy. I believe in a growth mindset, where all students have the ability to progress and grow despite their circumstances. I plan to foster an environment that helps support this mindset to help my students achieve their best. I will foster strong connections through building good relationships with parents and students, as I believe this will enhance student learning by providing open communication and constructive feedback. It is also important to work collaboratively with colleagues as part of team to support myself and foster further student learning.
